Cushing Design Co. is a boutique heritage consulting firm based in Windsor, Nova Scotia. We help property owners thoughtfully restore and revitalize historic places through heritage-informed design.

We are dedicated to preserving historic architecture, championing sustainability through intentional design, and supporting quality local craftsmanship. By reimagining spaces with respect for their history and the artisans who shaped them, we breathe new life into historic buildings while minimizing environmental impact.

We work with clients to plan, design, and conserve cultural heritage resources, including historic homes, commercial and institutional buildings, and landscapes, with a focus on historical integrity, sustainability, and custom curation.

Elizabeth’s passion for historic places began early, shaped by time spent in her grandparents’ Lunenburg bump house and family trips to historic house museums across Nova Scotia. These experiences fostered a lifelong appreciation for historic architecture, craftsmanship, and the stories embedded within old buildings. Today, Elizabeth combines expansive experience in heritage planning and preservation with a thoughtful, sustainability focused approach to design. She is currently restoring a 1902 Queen Anne home with her family, an experience that continues to inform her understanding of historic buildings and sensitive rehabilitation.
Historic Inspired Design
Cushing Design Co. provides heritage informed exterior and interior design guidance for property owners restoring or renovating historic buildings.

We help clients make thoughtful design decisions that honour the architectural character of their homes while supporting modern living needs. Services include exterior restoration guidance, historically appropriate material and colour selections, architectural salvage integration, and heritage approval support. Our work focuses on creating spaces that feel authentic, timeless, and deeply connected to place.

With experience in heritage planning and preservation, we approach projects with sensitivity to historical context, long-term sustainability, and practical implementation. This experience allows us to anticipate potential heritage considerations early in the design process and develop thoughtful, historically appropriate solutions.

Projects begin with a complimentary site visit to discuss the scope of work, document the building, and better understand the home’s history, age, and architectural character. Cushing Design Co. can also coordinate with contractors during implementation phases of a project.
